The Melissa Mitchell Band comes to Seldovia Saturday May 31 for an evening of soulful, jazzy music that’ll be great to dance to. Melissa is native to Alaska and has been playing in and around the state and the Pacific Northwest for over a decade. A singer and songwriter inspired by musicians such as Ani DiFranco, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor, she has a repertoire ranging from classic rock to jazz. She sings with a smooth, powerful voice and a passionate, heartfelt style. Melissa brings with her Dawn Venters (string bass), Tori Duggan (fiddle) and Kliff Hopson (percussion).
Melissa has performed with the acoustic group Homegrown, and has opened for Cheryl Wheeler. She has produced 4 CDs, all in Alaska, including 2005’s Freakin’ Live, and Alma (2006), an eclectic mix of songs taking the listener through the highs and lows of life’s journey. Live at the Beartooth Theater (2007) records Melissa’s opening sets for the August 2007 Indigo Girls concert. Dawn Venters accompanies on bass.
Melissa reaches out with her music to charitable organizations, and has lent her talents to efforts such as the compilation CD Alaskan Women Songwriters for Peace, the proceeds going to local charities such as STAR (Standing Together Against Rape).
This is Alaskan music at its best. Join us!
The concert will be held outside if weather permits. Look for an email update and signs around town for the exact location. Otherwise we’ll be at the Susan B. English School. Concert time is 7:30pm. Tickets are available at the door for $15/adult, $8/child, or $35/family.
Update 5/29: The concert will be held outdoors on the old SVT tent platform (for those from out of town, that means the wooden patio between the Tribal Cache and Main Street Market, on the Main Street waterfront). If it rains, the concert will be held in the Susan B. English School Commons.
